HP Jornada 720 Services

HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC is small, light and delivers the power, speed, and flexibility. It lets you run the applications as well as send and receive email and use the internet away from your work. It works fast and gets fast data access with a high performance 206MHz StrongArm SA1110 32-bit processor, 32 MB SDRAM, high-speed 51MHz memory data bus, and 2D graphics acceleration. It has convenient portable power and weighs 1.1 lbs for total mobility.

It comes with an integrated 56Kbps V.90 modem, docking station for easy connection to a PC, AC adapter, and rechargeable battery. It has an integrated speaker and stereo headphone jack for audio playback and TFT active matrix for the multimedia. It can mix and match more than 64,000 colors at once and renders a crisp text. Its keyboard is just large enough for comfortable touch typing and its large 640 x 240 screen makes web browsing and document editing easy.

There are several built-in connectors/slots: a Type II PCMCIA slot, a Type I CompactFlash slot, a UTP connector for the modem, and a 115 kps infrared port. There are also three buttons for the media player (volume louder/softer and play), 11 hardware shortcut buttons, and four silkscreen buttons on the right-hand side of the screen.

The operating system and built-in software:

It is powered by Microsoft's Handheld PC 2000 software. Anyone who knows Windows can use it. It has distinct look and feel of MS Windows 9x and it looks like a smaller version of Windows 9x, with the idea that a pointer, not a mouse is used.

There are some major differences, mostly due to hardware limitations of small device: the screen is smaller; there are no function keys (F1, F2 … F12); and no mouse. Not only that, the size of Windows 9x can be over 500 MB, depending on the installation preferences, compare to HP Jornada 720’s ROM, that is only about 20 MB and that is including the Pocket MS Office applications and other built-in software.

The main screen looks very familiar with its taskbar and desktop. There are several default links on the desktop available, just as in the Start menu. The links for Basic programs like Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket Access and Pocket PowerPoint, Control Panel, last used documents and etc. can be seen under Start Menu. Of course, Pocket Internet Explorer and File Explorer are included, as well as world clock, calculator, voice recorder, Solitaire, a notepad called Inkwriter (to type or scribble notes), and the Windows Media Player. There are several communication applications HP has included and several extras, like Omnisolve (an advanced problem solver/calculator), a backup program (to backup internal memory to a CF card), Quickpad (an extra notepad), ChaiVM (a Java Virtual Machine), DialUp (a configuration and dialup wizard), HP Viewer (a fully integrated program for Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts), and Yahoo! Messenger. HP has also provided some utilities to easily configure a device, like HotKeys, security settings, and sound and display settings.
